Vintage Bolivian manta in a vibrant palette of pale pinks, orange, and grey. Featuring traditional geometric designs, bands of color and motifs.
Bolivian manta (or aguayo) are small, hand-woven blankets traditionally made of wool by the Andean people. Used to carry infant or dry goods, mantas are typically made in black or dark brown wool with colorful detailing using all natural dyes, often with animal motifs, each identifying the region of origin. A mainstay of Andean culture, mantas reflect a deep, utilitarian beauty.
Each blanket is incredibly time consuming to make, beginning with raising the sheep, shearing and spinning the wool, dyeing the yarn, and then weaving on handmade looms. They are made to last a lifetime, or several lifetimes, and serve many purposes.
