Elegant antique Chinese cabinet in the Coromandel style. Made in the mid twentieth century. Of beautiful character and charm, the cabinet is decorated with carved and lacquered paintings of pale pink roses, petite birds, and parrots balancing on garden branches.
Fitted with solid wood legs and finished with ivory silk tassels. Upper cabinet includes interior shelf.
Coromandel is a particular engraving technique, involving the elaborate application of layers of lacquer onto solid wood. Ornate decorations requested would be engraved by hand onto the material and the imprints meticulously lacquered upon to create the vibrant design. Originating in the east during the late Ming Dynasty, the technique was later brought to Europe in the 17 century with enormous success.
