ABOUT
The Erica Tanov Design Studio and Showroom is a Berkeley-based multidisciplinary design space and venue that presents Erica’s complete vision and ethos of relaxed luxury. Housed in an 1878 Italianate Victorian building, the studio showcases the full Erica Tanov collection of interior goods – furniture, wallpaper, tile, bedding, textiles, as well as rare antiques – and serves as a gathering space that embraces arts and leisure. Reflecting a collaborative environment that supports exhibitions from emerging and contemporary creatives, the studio is a space of inspiration and resource for designers, artists, and enthusiasts alike.

ABOUT ERICA
A California native, Erica moved to New York in 1985 to study at Parsons School of Design. After graduating, she remained in Manhattan where she launched her eponymous label in 1990. Her earliest signature pieces – seamed slips and camisoles – redefined essential loungewear, and were sold at Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, and Henri Bendel. Her line evolved into clothing and naturally expanded to include home goods, becoming what’s now a lifestyle brand — all with the vision of creating environments of relaxed luxury, inspired by and with deep reverence to nature.
Erica returned to the Bay Area in 1994 to open her first retail store in Berkeley. She has since opened stores and built a community of design enthusiasts in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, earning recognition as a founder of the distinctively Californian relaxed luxury movement.
Erica lives in Berkeley with her musician / composer husband, Steven Emerson, and their two children.

She serves on the board of the Creative Growth Art Center and has been a guest speaker at FOG Art + Design and both San Francisco and New York Design Week. Her first book, Design By Nature, is a celebration of her design philosophy. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Architectural Digest, Monocle, The Wall Street Journal, and Elle Decor. THE DESIGN BY NATURE ETHOS
“No matter where you are, beauty of some kind surrounds you...Beauty is everywhere and accessible to everyone” — Erica Tanov
For more than thirty years, Erica Tanov’s design approach, from conceiving clothing collections and developing wallpaper to arranging a room, has aimed to reflect the effortless beauty of the natural world. Taking cues from nature’s abstract and literal beauty, her intuitive process embraces the subtleties and imperfections of natural environments. Her philosophy, documented in her book, Design By Nature, expands on the accessibility of beauty, encouraging individuals to discover the inherent beauty that is just outside their door.
