Tell us a little bit about your background.
I was living in Southern California when I decided I needed a change. I was recruited for a position with Alameda County, so I moved up to Northern California with my kids — who were 12 and 15 at the time — and we made a home here.
One thing I knew was that I was moving from a warm, dry climate to somewhere with more rain, so I wanted a home where I could just sit inside and look out, even on colder days. Now, with an outdoor garden I’ve put together, it’s exactly that — a place of serenity where I can observe the world around me. I’ve always loved gardens, which is part of why Erica’s design work appeals to me. Her book, Design by Nature, really captures that feeling of being calmed and inspired by natural beauty. No matter where I travel, I always make time for gardens.
Where are some of the gardens you’ve visited?
Last April, I visited several in Tokyo, and the Yves Saint Laurent Gardens in Marrakesh — The Jardin Majorelle — were absolutely stunning. Whether I’m in Cape Town, Japan, or the Bronx, I always seek out gardens. Wherever I go, I make time to be in those natural spaces.
What’s your philosophy when it comes to your travel wardrobe?
For me, natural fibers are everything. It’s all about breathability — letting my skin and body move freely. Linens, cottons, and silks are perfect, especially in warmer climes. And when I’m traveling, a soft, lightweight cashmere sweater is perfect for layering on colder flights.
What are three words that describe your approach to dressing?
Style. Comfort. Contemporary. I was just telling my daughter the other day — especially as I get older — I want to feel timeless.
How has your style changed over time?
Some things have evolved, but the essence has stayed the same. I’ve always loved magazines — ever since I was a teenager flipping through Seventeen and Ingenue, getting ink on my fingers, taking in how people put themselves together. That tactile experience shaped my awareness of personal style.
I’ve always wanted to stay current, but I’ve never been into fleeting trends. It’s more about refinement — finding what feels right for me. I still subscribe to Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and Elle which is how I first discovered Erica back when she was in New York!
What draws you to the Erica Tanov collection and how do you build the Essentials pieces into your wardrobe?
I love the high quality of materials and easy silhouettes that are emblematic of Erica Tanov clothing and home goods. The styling is understated which allows for each wearer to make the clothing her own. I mix Erica Tanov pieces with everything from designers like Dries Van Noten to everyday jeans. Shoes, bags and jewelry stand out against the beautiful fabrics and simple designs. And for living in Northern California, the sweaters are a year-round staple.
